My Trek Story- A Trip to Chopta Chandrashila

Chopta tour, Waking up to the sweet sound of temple bells echoing through the mountains, I stepped outside my cottage to a scene straight out of a dream — snow-draped Himalayan peaks gleaming under the soft morning light, with dense deodar forests standing tall like silent guardians. With a warm cup of tea in hand and a heart full of gratitude, I stood there in soaking in the raw, untouched beauty around me.

This wasn’t just a trip — it was a calling.

Sometimes, the best therapy is to take a break from city chaos, let go of deadlines, and head into the heart of nature. That’s exactly what I did when I booked my Chopta tour package with Tour My Holiday. From the moment I set foot on this land, I knew something was different — calmer, deeper. Maybe it’s because in the shadow of Lord Shiva’s sacred abode. Maybe it’s the mountains whispering peace into your ears. Either way, it felt like I had entered a whole new dimension of stillness and spiritual energy.

    About Chopta Chandrashila

A stunning panoramic view of Majestic Himalayas with lush green meadow has made my trek so amazing. Chandrashila trek is situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 13100 ft above sea level. This small village is full of beauty and authentic traditions of Uttarakhand which I have experienced during my trek.

Chopta to Chandrashila trek distance is approx 5.5 km and I rate this trek as easy. I was without my rucksack because the Chandrashila trek is a one-day trek, so it was quite easy to trek the mountain.Tungnath trek distance is 4 km and Tungnath to Chandrashila distance is 1.5 km, which takes around 4 hours on average to cover the distance. Chandrashila is the summit point of Chandrashila Trek.

The basecamp of Chandrashila trek is in Chopta. It will take approx 8 hours in both ways to trek from Chopta- Tungnath- Chandrashila and back to basecamp. Capture the beauty of snow-covered 360 views of Himalaya peaks like Mt Trishul, Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba from the summit point Chandrashila.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Laxman (Younger brother of Lord Ram) meditated at Chandrashila for years after defeating the Ravan. Some say Chandra Dev “Moon-God” spent time at this place, so this place is named Chandrashila.

Wandering into Wonder: My Journey to Chopta Tungnath

As the first rays of sunlight touched the snowy peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas, I knew I had arrived somewhere special. Chopta, often called the base of divine treks, greeted me with crisp mountain air, towering deodar trees, and a kind of silence that speaks directly to your soul.

I booked my Chopta tour package through Tour My Holiday, hoping to escape the monotony of daily life — and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Our adventure began with the Tungnath trek, a trail that doesn’t just take you uphill, but inward too. As we trekked through forest paths lined with rhododendron and oak, every step brought a sense of calm. The air smelled of pine and fresh snow, and the only sounds were our boots crunching on the trail and birds calling out from the treetops.

Reaching Tungnath Temple — the highest Shiva temple in the world — was an emotional moment. Sitting quietly near the temple, surrounded by ancient stone, snowy cliffs, and spiritual stillness, I felt something shift inside me. There’s a special kind of peace here — as if time pauses and lets you breathe freely.

But the journey didn’t stop there. We continued our climb toward the Chandrashila summit trek. The altitude rose, the wind picked up, and yet, the excitement grew stronger. After a steep push, we finally reached the summit — and the view? Indescribable. From this high perch, you can see Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and several other mighty Himalayan peaks rising proudly into the sky. It felt like the mountains themselves were whispering ancient secrets to us.

This entire Chandrashila trek was beautifully organized. Tour My Holiday handled every detail, from transportation and permits to warm homestays and guided trails. For someone like me who wanted a soulful mountain journey without logistical headaches, it was the perfect choice.

Whether you’re a beginner trekker, a spiritual seeker, or just someone craving a break from the noise — the Tungnath trek offers a magical escape. With stunning nature, sacred energy, and well-planned routes, it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve returned.

Best time to visit Chopta Chandrashila Trek

It was post-monsoon (End of Sept) When we went to the Chandrashila trek to see the beauty of lush green alpine meadows after the monsoon and bloomy wildflowers on the meadows. But if you like snow trek, this is one of the best winter treks for you.

You will see all the meadows and peaks covered with snow in winter and that time it is little difficult to climb up to Chandrashila because of the slippery and the trek will be covered with a thick layer of snow. But I’m more a meadows person where I can see all fresh wildflowers blossoming on my way till Chandrashila, So we choose post-monsoon for Chandrashila Trek, and according to me post-monsoon is the best time to visit Chandrashila because of the pleasant weather and serene beauty of alpine meadows with snow-capped Himalaya peaks.

Chopta Chandrashila Trek Itinerary – A Soulful Escape with Tour My Holiday

Day 1: Delhi to Chopta – The Journey Begins

After years of planning (and canceling), the dream to conquer the Chandrashila trek was finally set into motion. Bags were packed, playlists ready, and the excitement unmatchable.

We started our journey from Rishikesh after breakfast, taking the scenic route: Rishikesh – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Ukhimath . The road trip was a treat in itself, especially as we passed the stunning Tehri Lake, which stretched magnificently for around 10–15 km.

By the time we reached , it was late evening. Tired but thrilled, we checked into a cozy hotel — though you can also opt for campsites in Chopta for a raw, immersive experience under the stars.

Note: If you’re low on cash, make sure to withdraw it before you reach Chopta. The last ATMs are available at Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Agastmuni, or Ukhimath — there are no ATMs in Chopta.

    Day 2: Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashila – Chopta

The morning felt like a scene from a dream — dew-kissed grass, chilly winds, golden sunlight, and a hot cup of tea in my hand. It’s those little moments that stay with you forever.

Post breakfast, we packed our day trek essentials — water bottle, snacks, chocolates, juice, Bluetooth speaker (which we never used!), and began our Tungnath trek around 9 AM.

The trail led us through beautiful stretches of oak, deodar, and rhododendron forests, all in full bloom. The vibrant wildflowers, chirping birds, and cool mountain breeze made the walk feel less like a trek and more like nature’s therapy.

Halfway through, we took a breather at a lovely alpine meadow with a panoramic view of the Himalayas. It was so peaceful, so soothing — we didn’t even feel like playing music. Nature’s silence was far more powerful than any playlist.

After 3 hours and 4 km of trekking, we reached the ancient Tungnath Temple, standing tall at an altitude of 11,385 ft. Being the highest Shiva temple in the world, Tungnath is not just a trekker’s destination, but a spiritual haven. The energy around it — the stillness, the chants, the devotion — fills you with gratitude.

We spent some serene moments at Tungnath before continuing our climb to the Chandrashila summit — a steep, 1.5 km hike ahead. The final stretch was challenging, with a 500-meter steep ascent, but every drop of sweat was worth it when we reached the Chandrashila summit trek point at an altitude of 13,100 ft.

The view from the top was breathtaking. Snow-covered Himalayan giants like Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Mt. Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Nanda Ghunti stood in their majestic glory. On the summit, there’s a small temple and several stone-pebble pyramids — silent markers of peace, balance, and harmony.

It wasn’t just about reaching the peak — it was about connecting with something far bigger, deeper, and external.

    Day 3: Chopta to Delhi

The final morning arrived with a bittersweet feeling. After breakfast, we packed our bags — but also packed countless memories and moments that would stay with us forever.

Our Chandrashila trek with Tour My Holiday was more than just a mountain adventure — it was a journey to self, to peace, and to the heart of the Himalayas.

As we drove back to Delhi, I carried a silent smile, knowing that some stories are best felt, not told. The mountains spoke in stillness, and I listened — and maybe, I’ll return again to hear more.

The History of Chopta and Kedarnath: Tales from the Himalayas

The Untouched Beauty of Chopta: A Natural History

Chopta, often for its lush meadows (although you requested not to use that phrase earlier, so we’ll focus on its authentic charm), has a history deeply rooted in nature itself.

Chopta was never a bustling kingdom or an ancient city.
Instead, it has always been a hidden meadowland, known only to the native shepherds and tribes for centuries.
It forms part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area home to rare Himalayan flora and fauna.

For generations, it remained untouched by modern civilization.
Its vast green valleys, dense forests of rhododendrons, deodars, and pines served as summer pastures for the local villagers from nearby Sari, Makku, and Ukhimath.
These communities revered Chopta as a sacred land blessed by Lord Shiva himself.

It was only in recent decades — especially after the growing popularity of the Chopta Tungnath trek and Chandrashila summit trek — that Chopta began appearing on the maps of trekkers and travelers seeking serenity far from the crowded hill stations.

Even today, it is not a town — it’s a pristine landscape with minimal human interference, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan giants like Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba.

The Sacred Past of Kedarnath: Myths, Legends, and Faith

While history is about untouched nature, Kedarnath’s history is wrapped in mythology, devotion, and miracles.

Kedarnath Temple — perched at 3,583 meters amidst mighty snow peaks — is believed to be over 1,200 years old.
But the legend of Kedarnath stretches even further back, into the times of the Mahabharata.

Kedarnath in Mythology: The Mahabharata Connection

After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas were filled with guilt for killing their kin and sought Lord Shiva’s blessings for forgiveness.
However, Shiva, angry at the bloodshed, disguised himself as a bull (Nandi) and tried to evade them.

The Pandavas chased him, and Shiva dived into the ground to disappear.
Bhima, the second Pandava, caught him by the hump — and Shiva’s body parts appeared in different places in the Garhwal region:

    • Hump in Kedarnath
    • Arms in Tungnath (near Chopta)
    • Face in Rudranath
    • Stomach in Madhyamaheshwar
    • Hair in Kalpeshwar

These five places together are known as the Panch Kedar.

Thus, Kedarnath Temple was built at the spot where the hump of Shiva appeared.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Kedar, another form of Shiva — the protector and destroyer.

    chopta tour package

    Who Built The Kedarnath Temple?

Historical studies suggest that Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century Hindu philosopher and saint, resurrected the Kedarnath temple around 8th century AD.
He is credited for reviving Hinduism and building temples across India to unite spiritual India.

Interestingly, it is believed that Adi Shankaracharya attained Moksha (liberation) right behind the Kedarnath Temple, where his Samadhi (final resting place) exists even today.

The massive stone slabs of the temple were constructed without any binding mortar — a marvel of ancient architecture, considering the harsh weather conditions at such a high altitude.

Chopta and Kedarnath Today: A Journey Beyond Time

Modern explorers now walk the same ancient trails:

    • Chopta’s green meadows offer a starting point for treks like the Tungnath temple trek and Chandrashila summit trek.
    • Kedarnath’s spiritual magnetism pulls millions of pilgrims each year.

Many travelers combine both destinations in one spiritual-adventure trip, often booking combined Chopta tour packages or Kedarnath-Chopta treks from Delhi.

Walking these trails today isn’t just a trek; it’s a journey through the timeless, sacred geography of Uttarakhand — where every mountain whispers stories of gods, warriors, monks, and seekers.

In Short: What The Histories Teach Us

    • Chopta’s story is about untouched nature, simplicity, and quiet Himalayan majesty.
    • Kedarnath’s story is about spiritual endurance, forgiveness, and the triumph of faith.

Together, they form a soul-stirring chapter of the Himalayas — perfect for seekers of peace, adventure, and devotion.

How Difficult is the Chandrashila Trek?

The Chandrashila Summit Trek is a popular choice among trekkers, offering a perfect mix of adventure and scenic beauty. While it’s considered a moderate-level trek, its difficulty can vary depending on your fitness level, experience, and the season you choose to visit. Whether you’re planning the Chopta Chandrashila Trek or aiming for the summit, here’s a detailed breakdown of the trek’s difficulty level and tips to prepare physically and mentally.

    1. Difficulty Level: Moderate but Rewarding

    • Trail Overview : The Chopta Chandrashila Trek starts from Chopta, a serene hill station, and takes you through lush rhododendron forests, open meadows, and steep ascents. Key highlights include the ancient Tungnath Temple and the breathtaking Chandrashila Summit at 3,690 meters.
    • Elevation Gain : The trek begins at Chopta (2,680 meters) and climbs steadily to the summit, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 meters. While the climb isn’t extreme, the altitude can be challenging for beginners or those not acclimatized.
    • Terrain : The trail includes well-marked paths through forests, rocky sections near Tungnath, and steep inclines toward the Chandrashila Summit . The final stretch can be strenuous, especially in winter when snow adds to the difficulty.
    • Duration : A typical Chopta Chandrashila Trek takes 2–3 days, making it manageable for most people. However, the summit push requires stamina and determination.

    2. Physical Preparation Tips

To ensure you enjoy the Chandrashila Summit Trek without feeling overwhelmed, here are some physical preparation tips:

    • Cardio Workouts : Build endurance by incorporating activities like jogging, cycling, or brisk walking into your routine. These exercises help improve lung capacity and stamina, which are crucial for high-altitude treks.
    • Strength Training : Focus on strengthening your legs and core muscles with exercises like squats, lunges, and planks. Stronger muscles will help you tackle steep ascents and rocky terrains more easily.
    • Practice Hikes : If possible, go on short hikes or treks in your local area to get used to walking on uneven surfaces and carrying a backpack. This will simulate the conditions of the Chopta Chandrashila Trek .
    • Altitude Awareness : Since the Chandrashila Summit Trek reaches high altitudes, proper acclimatization is key. Stay hydrated, take breaks during the climb, and avoid rushing to prevent altitude sickness.

    3. Mental Preparation Tips

Mental strength is just as important as physical fitness for a successful trek:

    • Stay Positive : The final ascent to the summit can test your patience, especially if the weather turns harsh or the trail becomes slippery. Stay focused on the reward—panoramic views of iconic peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.
    • Set Realistic Goals : Break the trek into smaller milestones, such as reaching Tungnath first and then aiming for the summit. Celebrating small victories keeps morale high and makes the journey feel less daunting.
    • Embrace Challenges : Understand that trekking involves effort, and challenges are part of the adventure. Remind yourself why you chose this journey—it’s all about pushing boundaries and enjoying nature.

    4. Seasonal Difficulty Factors

The difficulty of the Chopta Chandrashila Trek can vary depending on the season:

    • Spring (March–May) : The weather is pleasant, and blooming rhododendrons make the trail visually stunning. This is the easiest time to attempt the Chandrashila Summit Trek .
    • Summer (June–August) : Expect mild rains and lush greenery. The trails might be muddy, so wear proper footwear and carry rain gear.
    • Autumn (September–November) : Clear skies and crisp air make this season ideal for the Chandrashila Summit Trek , though mornings and evenings can be chilly.
    • Winter (December–February) : Snow adds beauty but also difficulty. The trail becomes slippery, and temperatures drop significantly. Only attempt this if you’re comfortable with cold conditions and have experience trekking in snow.

    5. Essential Gear for the Trek

Having the right gear can significantly reduce the difficulty of the Chopta Chandrashila Trek :

    • Footwear : Invest in sturdy, waterproof trekking shoes with good grip, especially if you’re trekking in winter.
    • Clothing : Layer your clothing to adapt to changing temperatures. Include thermals, a fleece jacket, and a windproof outer layer for high-altitude sections.
    • Backpack Essentials : Carry a daypack with essentials like water bottles, energy snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit.
    • Trekking Poles : These are helpful for maintaining balance, especially on steep and snowy trails.

Echoes of the Himalayas: The Untold History of Auli and Chopta

Where Myths, Mountains, and Magic Come Alive

The Auli-Chopta region, nestled deep in the heart of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas, is more than just a traveler’s paradise. Beyond the snow-capped peaks and lush green meadows lies a timeless story—woven with mythology, ancient pilgrimage, and untamed nature. Before it became one of the most sought-after destinations for nature lovers and trekkers, Auli and Chopta were sacred grounds and hidden gems that only a few knew about.

Chopta – The Mythical Meadow of the Gods

Often referred to as the “Mini Kedarnath Trail,” Chopta has been part of the sacred Kedarnath region for centuries. Historically, it served as a resting point for sages and pilgrims on their way to the Panch Kedar temples. The most significant among them is Tungnath Temple, which stands proudly as the highest Shiva temple in the world, perched at 3,680 meters.

    chopta tour package

    Legends and Legacy

According to legend, the Pandavas from the Mahabharata built the Tungnath Temple to atone for their sins during the Kurukshetra war. The myth goes that Lord Shiva, trying to avoid the Pandavas, took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground—leaving parts of his body at five places now known as Panch Kedar. The Chopta Tungnath trek retraces this spiritual trail.

Auli – From Army Outpost to Skiing Capital

Unlike Chopta’s ancient roots, Auli’s development is relatively recent. Traditionally a grazing ground for local shepherds, Auli was strategically developed by the Indian Army in the 1980s as a training destination for high-altitude warfare.

The Rise of a Snow Paradise

What followed was a transformation: With its perfect slopes and consistent snowfall, Auli became India’s answer to Swiss ski towns. Soon, the Joshimath-Auli Ropeway was introduced—one of the highest and longest in Asia—further boosting Auli’s appeal. Today, it is renowned as India’s skiing capital, hosting national and international ski events.

From Seclusion to Spotlight – The Modern Revival

For decades, both Chopta and Auli remained relatively unexplored. But as sustainable tourism began gaining popularity, these twin Himalayan treasures gained traction among backpackers, yoga practitioners, photographers, and adventure seekers.

With easy accessibility from Rishikesh and customized Auli Chopta tour packages from Delhi, this region is now a top destination for eco-tourism and spiritual travel.
